Bartolo Colon’s regulation spot for closer remains undefined in New York Yankees – MLB News
Bartolo Colon may not have formally found his place in the New York Yankees' starting rotation, but he could be shifted to a closer position.
After this shocking news, Colon said, "I am kind of surprised. But I felt great. Every pitch that I threw, I felt good about every pitch."
The Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi was content with the abilities of Colon as he said, “That's the Bartolo that I remember. The guy, who had outstanding command of his fastball, didn't walk people and didn't beat himself. We have a little time to sort it out,
and we'll sort it out."
But the Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman has some different views as he believed that Colon couldn't shelter a place with his hard-pitching. Colon was competing with Freddy Garcia, Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre for the last two positions in the Yankees’
regulation.
The Yankees want to gather the abilities of each candidate before creating the last decision for the alternation. The official statement might come at the end of the Spring Training season. The team is functioning with a comparatively small model size, but
the panic is always about the pitchers who are considered to be the game winning players.
The experienced right-hander Colon had played his extra-ordinary spring season with the Yankees. He pitched in six sturdy innings and resulted in a 3-1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays at Charlotte Sports Park.
Colon permitted only two strikes and no walk with five hit out. He displayed an exemplary performance in that inning, when he offered just a single homer to Jaso's support.
During the current spring season, the 37-year-old Colon has an ERA of 2.40 and permitted just four runs in 15 innings. Colon had best day out of the Grapefruit League season in 2009 when he pitched 18-20 extra throws.
Now, Colon looks satisfied for the final announcement. In the spring season, he thought that the result of the alternating spot as a closer will be in favour of him, but it’s still pending. He also knows that all of his challengers have pitched the ball
sound, that’s why he has a fear of losing the spot as well.
It will be interesting to see if the Yankees include Colon in the primary line-up or just keep him at the position of closer. The competition is fierce within the team, as all the pitchers are of the highest quality. The Yankees understand the importance
of their decision, as the regular season is just right around the corner.
Only time will tell if the Yankees give Colon a spot in the pitching line-up or maybe get a spot as closer.
