Baruch men’s volleyball team defeats Hunter Hawks by 3-0 in CUNY Conference final on Friday
The Baruch men’s volleyball team competed against the Hunter Hawks in a championship match on Friday.
Baruch already had the title of CUNY Conference champions under their belt two times, but their recent win enabled Baruch to stretch their winning streak to a total of three consecutive wins. Not only that, the victory in the final of the conference play
also meant that Baruch had now won all of their last 52 played matches.
Baruch had their mind focused on defeating Hunter from the start of the tournament. Baruch knew that the real challenge would come from that quarter and they were right. The rest of the matches that Baruch played in the entire tournament came easily for
Baruch.
Even the semi-final match was won by the now champions in a clean sweep. Baruch was able to win all three sets against York quite comfortably. This is reflected by the final set scores that they were able to post at the end of the semi-final which stood
at 25-11, 25-12 and 25-6.
As soon as the first set of the final commenced, Hunter asserted their dominance by taking the first point for themselves. Hunter had the lead until the middle of the game when the Bearcats put on a spurt of speed bringing the score to a tie at 16-16.
Once they got started, Baruch was unstoppable. Hunter could not do much to halt the forward march of the Bearcats until they sealed the deal by winning the first set at 25-18.
Building on the momentum generated at the end of the opening set of the game led the Bearcats to put on a soaring performance in the second set as well. Baruch was able to take the lead at 17-7.
Hunter was unable to close in the gap effectively and was still at a huge deficit when the set reached its middle stages with a Bearcat lead at 20-10. Baruch did not let their advantage slip and took the second set as well at 25-18.
The third set of the match brought out the competitive side of Hunter in full force. Therefore, what followed was a tough and thrilling fight between the two teams. In the end however, Baruch took the final set of the game at 25-18.
Baruch had been undergoing vigorous training under their coach, Allison Stack both before and during the start of the CUNY Conference matches. The hard work of the coach paid off as her team was able to earn the prestigious title. Also, Stack was named as
the Coach of the Year.
Stack made the following comments upon receiving the prestigious honour, “It feels great. It's always nice to be recognized as a coach and it's a little bonus that my colleagues recognized my hard-work. Plus, the jacket was pretty cool that I got, so I'll
be wearing that.”
