Question:

Basal Body Temperature?

I have been taking my body temperature since July 7th (last day of my menstural cycle. I have had unusally low body temps. I had to make my own chart b/c I was running around 97-96.8. Yesterday my temp. shot up to 97.7, today it was 97.6, Would that mean that I'm ovulating? A little back ground, I had to take 10 days of progesterone last month to start, I had went w/o a menstural cycle for over 3 mnths. My dr. wanted me to chart my bbt to see if I was ovulating or not. I take synthroid for thyroid issues, I noticed where issues w/ your thyroid could cause low bbt temps. Could the synthroid be causing the lower temps? Sorry for so many questions, but when the dr. said I might have an ovulation disorder I freaked out, now want to know whats going on... Hubby and I are not actively ttc, but we're not not ttc if that makes any sense, we want a child but were going to wait until dec. to start "trying", however we are not using any bc either...

  1. I have no thyroid due to cancer and I take synthroid also. My temps are still pretty normal as I am TTC for #2 for the last 2 years i keep track too!

  2. Hypothyroidism can cause low temps and unusually long cycles.  However, I have low temps BUT normal cycles (28/29 days).  I've been checked for hypothyroidism, but tests came back normal.  I too have had to create my own BBT chart, because pre-ovulation my temps run between 96.5 and 97.0.  Post ovulation they run 97.0 to 98.0.   So your low temps could be caused by the hypothyroidism or it could just be your normal temp.

I would say that since your temp shot up, that should mean you ovulated.  Have you tried entering your data into www.fertilityfriend.com?  It's a free service, and it'll help you figure out if you are ovulating, and when you are, and all sorts of other useful stuff.

It's good that you've started charting.  I suggest checking out fertilityfriend.com.  Good luck---baby dust!

  3. I definitely think you have ovulated based on what you said.  As long as your temps stay above 97.2 (since you normally have low pre-o temps due to your thyroid condition).  You will know more once you chart a few cycles, but I would say you definitely ovulated.  I am going through something similar, although I didn't get my period after taking 10 days of progesterone, so I'm on to trying it again.  Feel free to shoot me an email to chat further.  I also chart. Goodluck!!!
