Base Housing in Germany?

Question

We just can't afford to live off base as we've found out - cost of utilities is killing us! We LOVE our house, but it's very hard to heat and utilities so expensive and we have a baby on the way.

So we were looking on moving on base. A lot of people say it's very nice and they save money. My question is - should we go for Vogelweh or Ramstein housing? Which is nicer? I found pics of Ramstein housing but not Vogelweh...

I've been to both Vogelweh and Ramstein, and I think the housing is better on Ramstein.  It's more up to date, and there are parks on nearly every corner.

My husband and I have been living in Vogelweh family housing for quite some time now and we also have friends living the Ramstein family housing so this comes from experience - You should definately choose Vogelweh housing.

The buildings may be 4 stories tall, but over the past 10 years the apartments have been updated and are so much bigger and a heck of a lot nicer than those in the Ramstein buildings. The apartment buildings consist of mostly 2 bedroom apartments but there are eight 3 bedroom apartments to choose from. Four on one side of the building, and four on the other side. Vogelweh also has town houses, but those are only available to large families right now.

In comparison:

The layout of Vogelweh housing is spacious (including within the apartments) and easy to navigate, whereas Ramstein is too crowded...as if the buildings were just plopped right next to each other without a care in the world.

Our buildings have 4 floors; Ramstein has 3. Vogelweh housing looks is cleaner, and there are plenty of parks to choose from if you have small children. Underground trash dumpsters, designated doggy bathroom areas complete with a box full of bags for poo pick up. Parking spaces are slightly larger than those of Ramstein. Also, the stairwells on Vogelweh have actual windows that let in light, lol, so they are a lot brighter, and they are also roomier.

The Apartments:

VOGELWEH: 2 bdrm

Dead bolt lock on inside of door

Long hallway

Fairly large bathroom (storage, shower/bath, double sink, towel warmer)

Seperate laundry room with cupboard space

Wall fan in both bathroom and laundry room

Combined living/dining room

Spacious kitchen with plenty of cabinet space

Breakfast bar area

Celing fan in living room and bedrooms

Wooden floors throughout house

Tile flooring in bathroom, laundry, and kitchen

Built in closets

Balcony with swing open door

Large private storage room in basement

VOGELWEH: 3 bdrm

Everything as listed above w/ extra bathroom in master bedroom

Laundry room is in a separate room in master bedroom

RAMSTEIN: 2 bdrm

[ No dead bolt locks and no hallway leading to any rooms ]

Small bathroom (shower/bath, sink, storage space)

Washer/dryer area in small "hallway" like area

Small living room

Small dining room

Extremely small awkward kitchen area

Barely any cupboard space within kitchen

Ceiling fan in living room

Built in closets

Tile flooring throughout house

Balcony with multifunctional door (open out, or slant open)

Storage room in basement

RAMSTEIN: 3 - 4 bdrm

Same as listed above w/ extra bathroom in master bedroom

(I suppose. I've never been as far as the living room in those.)

I don't know what the town houses look like on the inside, but don't exactly expect to get one. The list for those are long, and they always go by rank.
