Base-running key for Milwaukee Brewers’ success – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke on Friday, March 2, enunciated what will indeed be the strategy for the team in the Cactus League: Aggressive base-running. The strategy, in effect, is no different from the one adopted and implemented the past
season.
Roenicke is currently in the second year of the contract he had with the Milwaukee Brewers. Judging from the performance that the team exhibited the past season, Roenicke’s stint in the club is marked by success.
The strategy that was followed in 2011 will see its aggressive pursuit this year as well. This Roenicke does to somehow compensate the loss of Prince Fielder.
"I'd like to be a little more creative in what we do," Roenicke said. "It's all about how you manufacture runs without Prince [Fielder] in the lineup. We need to do some things to maybe make up for his loss."
But there are certain vulnerabilities that need to be overcome. The fact that the Brewers do not have a big chunk of fast runners may turn out to be tricky. With Rickie Weeks unable for now to be as fast as previously due to the injury, will be a problem
that he has to deal with.
Apart from that, only Nyjer Morgan, Ryan Braun and Carlos Gomez can be counted upon as credible threats when it comes to stolen bases.
Spring Training, as the team manager views it, has set a good benchmark to see how things might turn up in the regular season.
"If we're running into too many outs, and I don't like what's going on, then we'll rein them back a little bit. But I think Spring Training is a good test for them to see what they can do, how far we can go with being aggressive,” Roenicke said.
Whatever the complexities and difficulties that characterises the Brewers’ team manager, it will be of great assistance to help the team steer out of any problem. It will be interesting to see how the club practically implements the plans he has formulated
as team manager. The Brewers will be looking to put in a good performance during Spring Training as the 2012 regular season is right around the corner.
