How is the ERA figured out? They always have a pitcher's name then the 2.54 or whatever next to their name. I think they call it an ERA. How do they figure that out?

Does anybody know the lowest ERA ever recorded in a month and season?

  1. To calculate a pitcher's Earned Run Average, take the total number of earned runs he has given up and multiply by 9.  Divide that total by the number of innings he has pitched.  That will give you his ERA.

I think Bob Gibson might have the lowest ERA ever recorded, something around 1.00 for the entire season.  Not positive if his is the absolute lowest, but it has to be close.

  2. ERA stands for Earned Run Average.  It's an average number of runs the pitcher would give up if he pitches a complete game.

    To calculate ERA:

Number of Earned Run TIMES Innings in a normal game DIVIDED Innings Pitched.

Some pepole will say multiply by 9 but if you're cumputing the ERA for a Little Leaguer you'd use 6 or a High School pitcher you'd use 7.

The lowest ERA in a month or season depends on a minimum number of innings.  Some pitchers have pitched 1 inning and not given up a run so their ERA would be 0.

In September of 1988 Orel Hershiser pitched 55 innings with an ERA of 0.00.  The lowest ERA for a season with enough innings to qualify is by Tim Keefe who had 0.86 in 1880.  After 1900 the lowest is Dutch Leonard in 1914 with 0.96

  3. ERA= earned run average and its calculated by runs per nine innings. like if i pitched 3 innings and allowed 1 run my ERA would be 3 for that game

  4. Earned Run Average

ERA == (earned runs * 9) / (innings pitched), conventionally to two decimals.

Since 1901, the lowest season ERA to qualify for the ERA title was 0.96 by Dutch Leonard for the 1914 Boston Red Sox.

Since the deadball era, Bob Gibson's 1.12 in 1968 is the low   mark.

For one month, the obvious citation is Orel Hershiser at the end of the 1988 season. In September, he pitched five consecutive complete game shutouts, then finished with 10 shutout innings in a game his Dodgers lost, 2-1, in 16. That's 55 of his 59 scoreless inning streak, for a September ERA of 0.00.
