Baseball Hall of Fame has Barry Larkin as a new entrant – MLB News
The Baseball Hall of Fame has formally got a new entrant as on Monday, January 9, Barry Larkin attained this illustrious distinction as he virtually remained the incontestable aspirant with over 86 percent vote ballots cast for him.
Having had his association with the Cincinnati Reds, Larkin also hailed from the same hometown, he had also been entitled to three-time Golden Glove Award and more importantly, the 12-time National League All-Star. This is an achievement few players have
had the honour of attaining.
It is also important to recall that a player has to obtain at least 75 percent of the vote if he is to be eligible for the Hall of Fame. Interestingly, Barry Larkin could not make it last year when Roberto Alomar notched up the distinction from him.
While he remained third in the 2011 Hall of Fame race, this year brought refreshing news for the accomplished athlete. With 495 votes, he had an 86.4 percentage; behind him fell Jack Morris with 66.7 percent votes, having got 382 votes with Jeff Bagwell
on third, acquiring 321 votes.
With the kind of result that came his way last year, certainly somewhat morale-debilitating, his entry in the Hall of Fame now is indeed a magnificent boost for him. The fact that the vote was above 86 percent is a reminder of how things have changed so
dramatically and rightly so.
"That was really surprising," Larkin said about the huge increase. "I don't know how things change, but obviously the voters were happy with everything. That 86 percent is a very high number, but I'm so thankful to everyone who voted. I want to thank all
the baseball writers who voted for me."
He is the 22nd short-stop to make his way into the Hall of Fame and it comes at an equally significant time. The Cincinnati Reds have barely won any title lately. This accomplishment will go a long way to add to the confidence of the Reds in reacquiring
their once characteristic magical touch and perform well in the days to come.
