Baseball News: Matt Fox outpitches Rangers as Denard Span rockets the Twins to victory
The Minnesota Twins played hosts to the Texas Rangers this time as both clubs faced each other for a tough contest at Target Field. Much to the teams’ delight, 40,134 fans were scattered across the stands, chanting for their superstars on each roster.
The Texas side has been leading the American League West Division with 9 points and last night’s match was a chance to demonstrate their prowess around the Central region. Apart from flexing their muscles, the intention was to demonstrate to Major League Baseball that they were a stronger team now.
The side travelled to Minnesota with 23-year-old starting pitcher, Derek Holland. With an Earning Run Average of 4.93, this player was expected to deliver but that never happened. He allowed 6 hits and 4 runs in his loss to the hosts. The Twins were 3 game wins above the Chicago White Sox before this fixture.
It was important for the side to quell whatever threat arose and capitalize on as many points as possible. Much to the delight of the management, the victory against Rangers in their series opener came through and much of the praise was allotted to Matt Fox, who pitched his first start of the season with 90 throws in 5.2 innings. He allowed just 4 hits and 2 runs.
The Rangers started the game with the hitters on the plate in the top 1st. However, they couldn’t get through early as Fox was doing his best to contain them. Minnesota was not going to stay put as the team went in to full gear with Denard Span, who made his double to the left in the bottom 1st. The hitter then moved onto third base when Orlando Hudson grounded out to second.
Span’s run finally came after Joe Mauer also grounded out to the pitcher. The hit got the third baseman to run to the dugout for the 1st of the match. If Span was doing his bid to power the Twins to the top, Josh Hamilton was doing the same for Texas. In the top 2nd, Josh began his crusade for the team’s 1st with a single to the centre.
Nelson Cruz followed the act up with his own single to the right. While he moved to the first base, Josh moved up to the 2nd. Ian Kinsler entered the fray and flied out to the right, getting the top MVP (Most Valuable Player) candidate to the third base. The run finally came when Mitch Moreland hit a sacrifice fly to the right.
Both teams were leveled and no more runs were scored till the top 6th. Elvis Andrus was responsible this time as he moved Texas above Minnesota, in style. Rangers moved up after David Murphy singled to the left and got Andrus who stole the third base earlier, to score the 2nd for the ball club. It didn’t take the Twins long to reply as Hudson scored off Michael Cuddyer’s grounder out to second.
The clubs were tied up again and this back and forth play kept on continuing during the next innings. Texas scored their third in the top 7th through Kinsler who got a special push around the diamond. The player started off with a single to the centre. He then made his stretch for the second off Alex Burnett’s wild pitch. He afterwards, moved to the third from Moreland’s ground out to second.
The player finally scored when Julio Borbon sacrificed to the third. This brought the team to the forefront again and the pressure was put on the hosts. Meanwhile, Twins put Derek Holland under quite a predicament in the bottom 7th. The ball club got Matt Tolbert and Jason Repko on the first two bases and when Alexi Ogando came out to pitch, the team finally scored. Tolbert ran two bases home when James Jerry singled to the left.
The move brought the teams to a tie and something had to give. Minnesota didn’t take long to take the initiative and Span was under the spotlight again but this time against Reliever and Matt Harrison. His single to the right got the team victory as Jason Repko ran to the last base and got the home team to a 4 – 3 win.
