  1. 55 miles per hour is indeed a velocity question.  In this case, the distance does not change the velocity, though how soon the ball arrives does change.

1 mile per hour equals 5280 feet in 1 hour.  In your case, your ball travels 55 times 5280, or 290,400 feet in an hour, if you were throwing in a vacuum.

In essence then, your ball travels 60.6 feet in .0002087 hours, or 3/4 of one second, or 75 milliseconds.  If you were throwing to only 56 feet, it would travel at the same velocity - 55 miles per hour - but you would essentially cover the shorter distance in a shorter time.

In this case, the ball you threw would cover 56 feet in about 69 milliseconds.

    UPDATE:

This IS the correct answer.  The e=mc^2 answers are the wrong equation.  I studied Biophysics at Tulane University.

  2. e=mc^2 you guys are a bunch of wankers

  3. e = m c sq.

  4. e=mcsq so i guess a little bit more than 65 or something like that i guess possibly even it can hit 70 if use all the power

  5. E=mc^2 is AN ENERGY EQUATION NOT A VELOCITY EQUATION!!!!!!!!!

    Use the equation v=D/t

measure how fast it takes you to throw the ball to the target using a stopwatch. It's best to have a friend do the timing. Then substitue your time into that equation.

It'll be v=56/whatever time you got.

that will give you your speed in feet per second. you have to convert that to mph.

  6. If you throw 55mph, then you throw 55mph regardless of how far away you are. Driving a car 55mph is the same whether your 1 mile from your desintation or 500 miles from your destination.

However, I think what you're looking for is to find the speed you would have to pitch from 60.5 feet in order to have the ball get to home plate in the same amount of time as pitching 55mph from 56 feet. For this its a simple ratio, no complex math required:

    55mph            x mph

    --------      =   --------------

    56 feet           60.5 ft

    55*60.5/56 = 59.4

Therefore throwing 55mph from 56 feet away gives the hitter the same amount of reaction time as throwing 59.4mph from a standard 60.5 foot mound.
