Baseball Rundown: ‘Back to the Boiler room’ for Derek Jeter and Yankees
It was revealed recently that the New York Yankees resumed talks with Derek Jeter and his agent, Casey Close. A baseball official, who is linked with the negotiation process, announced the news recently. The Yanks have been going through some serious restructuring. Although there are concerns of an ageing squad at the helm of the club, fans, are closely following the developing stories on the stars that have been part of the roster for a long time.
Andy Pettitte is one pitcher, who has done a lot for the Yankees, and the management, knows that the most. Now thirty-eight-years-old and currently settling in with his family
in Houston, Texas, the ball thrower is contemplating a return and that too, on a low cost deal. On the other hand, negotiations are going well with top bull-pen player, Mariano Rivera. The veteran is striving for a two year deal and only time will tell, for who that end of the bargain concludes. For now, the focus is strictly on Jeter.
Although talks have resumed, there is a cold war beaming between the two parties, but that didn’t stop Hank Steinbrenner from saying,
"I feel confident that Derek will remain with the Yankees, and my brother does, as well."
When asked about the particulars on the process, Hank replied,
"I'm not going to get into who's met who. If there’s one thing to take from the response, it’s that one side has conceded to the demands of the other."
Jeter is looking at three years, with a valuation of $45 million, from the Yanks’ position but agent Close sees more cash, where many have failed to see. The two parties are not in the lightest moods but there is a speculation rampant that Derek, might not want to see the winter meetings go downhill. Not many clubs would want to sign a thirty-seven-year-old ballplayer, for that kind of money.
Nick Swisher recently made a promotional appearance in New York. When asked about the latest development in the negotiation process and Jeter’s future, he stated,
"Who knows what's going to happen? But I could not see him in any other uniform than the pinstripes. He’s the face of the franchise. He's done so much for this team, so much for the city, and so much for the game of baseball."
