Baseball Update: Injuries, an unending affair- Kevin from Boston Red Sox out for the season due to injury
Many teams plan that they will try to start a successful campaign and end it with a title or some sort of consolation prize. However, some teams don’t have the power to match that of big teams and some can’t manage to pull it off due to injuries to their players. The Red Sox are one of those teams that suffered injuries to players and under-performed, coupled with the injury to one their most significant player in the team, Kevin.
Kevin, one of the key players in the Boston Red Sox line up, is reportedly out for the rest of the season. This comes as a big blow to the Red Sox and their campaign. Kevin will be having surgery in the near future due the torn muscle he sustained on his right thumb. This will hurt the Red Sox a great deal, as Kevin was one of the leaders in their team and his batting will surely be the missing piece according to experts if the Red Sox lose a game.
The Red Sox have had an injury full season in which they have seen players like Jason Varitek, Josh Backett and many more injured as well, as some have been added to the disabled list. Now with Kevin injured, it is going to be a hard campaign though the Red Sox have already managed to put up good performances. Keeping in mind the long injury list that the Red Sox have, it amazes many experts how the Red Sox have managed to be only six and a half games behind in the AL-East.
Kevin is one of those players who have played more than 100 games in the season and one of five to have played in more than 90 games during the course of the season. The Yankees and the Rays are putting up strong performances with the regular season coming to an end. Keeping this in mind, the Red Sox are going to be hurt badly, as Kevin was consistently playing in the team and performing well. The Red Sox have won 61 games this season and many experts and reports suggest that it is the end of the season for the Red Sox with Kevin’s injury as a final blow.
With Kevin’s injury, it is expected that Mike Lowell will be doing the playing from now on. Mike, a 36 year old veteran, though is experienced but it is doubtful that he will be able to close the six game differences that the Red Sox have. Experts think that Mike has the potential but his recent form doesn’t support the idea for him being as impactful as Kevin was. Kevin has recently played in only one game since mid June.
Keeping the injuries in mind, along with the fact that the Yankees who are known for being stronger in the second half of the season, and Rays against whom the Youkillis does not have a particularly extravagant record, it is highly unlikely that they would climb this mountain. Moreover, this mountain has nothing but obstacles and hardships to offer.
In the upcoming weeks, the Red Sox will be playing the Yankees at home and the Rays. The Rays and the Yankees are getting better as the season moves on but with the injuries, the Red Sox are only getting worse after July.
The Youkilis have developed the reputation of being known as the team who battles till the very end. Now it remains to be seen whether they can maintain the performances that they were putting on, when Kevin was not injured. Some experts say that this is not possible, as Kevin was the key that had these players on the run. While some say that, the Red Sox have already coped up with the injuries and it is possible for them to continue the form that they were in. The General Manager of the Red Sox himself admitted the fact that a player like Kevin cannot be replaced.
