Baseball Update: Sabathia mesmerizes Tigers as Yankees win 6 – 2
Carsten Charles Sabathia returned for the New York Yankees, yesterday, to hand the Detroit Tigers their first defeat since their recent 3 games winning streak. The day in Yankee stadium was a lot cooler as clouds hovered over the ball park during the fixture. With 90% of the stands filled up with fans, the match brought in an energetic ambiance to the contest.
The Tigers were in the driving seat. Beating the Yankees in their last competitive outing, the players were high on morale. Being 1 up in the series, the ball club had the chance to decimate their opponents, along with prolonging their winning streak with vigour and determination. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be the case, as Sabathia proved too much for the hitters to deal with.
The Yankees were going in with a loss to their opponents from their previous, recent encounter. It came as no secret that Sabathia, who was on the verge to becoming the first American League to register 16 wins, would come in for the team to change things completely. With Alex Rodriguez out with a calf injury, the ace pitcher came in to fill the void and give the Yankees an added edge. For Joe Girardo, this was an all important encounter. Not only was the team 1 – 0 down in the series, but it was now on par with the Tampa Rays in the Eastern Division of the League. Ensuring the victory over the Tigers was a course of action that was deemed essential for the management. Nevertheless, when one brings in a top quality player like Sabathia, there’s just bad luck that could get the Yanks to lose.
Unfortunately, the tigers were not going to come out as the lucky ones with Sabathia on the prowl. However, things didn’t exactly start so well for the Yankees. Detroit was up on the batting bag in the top 1st. It did not take long for Sabathia to encounter a surprise early on as Austin Jackson made short work of his pitching by smashing a 409 feet homer down the left side of the ball park. Opening up the account for the visitors, the Yankees were pulled into reply quickly and they took the game to their opponents in the bottom 1st. Justin Verlander walked Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano to put the fielding side in a predicament. The pitcher would pay a high price as Nick Swisher would single to the left. That allowed Jeter and Brett Gardner to clear the last base to put two runs on the board.
With the Tigers down 2 – 1 down at the end of the first innings, things got a lot more difficult for the side. When the bottom 2nd session came into play, Curtis Granderson took the bag for the Yankees and produced a jaw busting 419 feet homer, banged across the right side of the park. This made the Detroit team feel miserable and as the game proceeded towards the bottom 6th, no additional runs were piled over by any team.
The New York stadium was set abuzz again in the bottom 6th when Derek Jeter’s single to the right released Gardner from the third base for his second and the team’s 4th run of the match. The Tigers would rally again but it would not work wonders against the master ace pitcher, Sabathia. Brandon Inge would be the only one to get through with a run, as he boomed a 396 feet homer over the right side of the park to take the fight to the Yankees in the top 7th. That would not deter the home team as Cano would respond in the bottom 7th with a 391 homer to the right as well, giving the fans to cheer about something.
Nick Swisher would later add another run to the Yankees score tally finishing the game on 6 New York – 2 Detroit. The hitter got on the scoring sheet after Ramiro Pena hit a sacrifice fly to the right, giving him the space to run past the last bag.
This series seems all too important for the Yankees. Their expenditure on new hitters during the transfer window would require the team’s management to aspire to a division victory. A wildcard berth would be a shame and the fans know that this is an amazing time to be a fan of the Yanks with all the great Major League Action forcing the home team’s hand on acting erratically. One can only wonders how the division table will look at the end of the season. But, there’s great action to be seen.
