I am having a baseball themed birthday party for my son in May and am looking for really good original ideas to make the party great. I have already ordered stuff from Oriental Trading but I would love some ideas to make the party memorable. It will be mostly adults at the party and about 10 kids ages 1-12.

Is your child a little league superstar or budding sports fan? With all the World Series excitement, now's the perfect time to make rounding the bases a birthday hit! Here are some tips that’ll help you hit a home run at their next birthday bash.

Naturally, this is a party you’ll want to host outdoors. Get lots of balloons in your team colors and use lyme and beanbags to create a baseball field in your backyard. No trip to the ballpark is complete without music. Make sure to play the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” If you have a movie projector, use it to show old game footage.

What to serve? Hot dogs, peanuts in the shell, and Crackerjacks, of course! Make your own, or stick with buttered popcorn in paper bags. If you prefer something healthier, try corn on a stick, soft whole wheat pretzels, or fruit kabobs. Wash it all down with a foamy root beer.

Baseball is a game for kids of all ages, so tailor your activities to the guests’ skill levels. Rookies can throw baseballs into a laundry hamper. Pros can try to knock down pyramids of empty soda cans (wrapped in paper and decorated). Real major leaguers can pitch at a bulls-eye painted on paper. Hold a contest to see who can hit the ball farthest. If you’re worried about balls going AWOL, bat with a water noodle or use a wiffle ball set.

Benched players will enjoy a make-your-own pennant table. Buy felt in your child's favorite team colors. Cut lots of long triangles out for the actual pennants and smaller bits for ties and letters. Set out glue, glitter, permanent marker and scissors and let them go crazy!

To make a baseball cake, start with two 9-inch round cake layers in your favorite layers. Assemble and frost smoothly with white icing. Then use strips of red string licorice set in opposing half circles to create a baseball. Cut shorter bits and align on each side to create stitching.

Stuff treat bags with baseball cards, Big League chew bubblegum, baseball stickers and temporary tattoos, team hats and accessories, Babe Ruth candy bars, printed out activity sheets and coloring pages – the sky’s the limit!

When it’s time to hand out treat bags, do it stadium style. Cut the top off a sturdy cardboard box, reinforce the bottom with extra tape and let your kids decorate it with baseball pictures. Punch holes in the sides, thread a wide ribbon through and knot it at each hole so you can hang it around your neck. Then see whom you can cajole into walking around yelling, “Treat bags! Get your nice fresh treat bags here!”

This quick and easy baseball cake is a home run with sports fans. Just follow the simple step-by-step instructions. You can find decorating icing at your local grocery store. The package should contain assorted writing tips.

    4 1/4 cups sifted flour

    1 1/2 tbsp. baking powder

    1 tsp. salt

    3 sticks unsalted butter

    3 cups sugar

    6 eggs

    4 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups milk (plus 6-8 tbsp. for frosting)

    3 sticks butter

    6 cups confectioners’ sugar (sifted)

    1 tube red decorating icing

1 package plastic icing tips for decorating

    Step 1

First, let’s make the simple yellow-cake recipe. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 10- by 2-inch baking pan. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and 3/4 teaspoon of salt, and set aside.

    Step 2

Beat together the unsalted butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Then add 2 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Add half the flour mixture and mix at low speed until just blended. Next, add 1 1/2 cups of milk, mixing until well combined.

    Step 3

Divide the batter into the prepared pans, making sure the surface is smooth.

    Step 4

Bake about 35 to 40 minutes in the middle of the oven until the cake is springy to the touch and a tester (a toothpick or a fork) comes out clean. Let cake cool.

    Step 5

Now let’s make the frosting. Beat the 3 sticks of regular butter with an electric or handheld mixer until soft. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and the 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Then gradually add the confectioners’ sugar one cup at a time.

    Step 6

Add the 6 to 8 tablespoons of milk and beat until light and fluffy. If the frosting seems too thick, add more milk until it becomes spreadable.

    Step 7

Now let’s decorate the cake. Place one of the cake layers upside down on a cake plate and spread a generous layer of frosting on it.

    Step 8

Place the second layer of the cake right-side up on top of the frosted layer. Then frost the top and the sides of the cake with a straight-edge spatula, for a smooth finish.

    Step 9

Using the red decorating icing and a straight-writing icing tip, draw a red semicircle at the top and bottom of the cake. Be sure to apply steady pressure with your hand while decorating.

    Step 10

To make the stitches on the baseball, draw little arrowhead shapes all across the semicircle.

    Step 11

For a nice clean finish, attach the star tip to the red icing tube and make a shell border around the base of the cake. Hold the tube at a 45-degree angle. Squeeze hard, letting the icing fan out a bit. Gradually relax the pressure and pull the tip away, making a small tail. Repeat all around the base of the cake.

  3. Definitely serve hotdogs, boxes of crackerjacks and popcorn. if  it an outdoor party on the lawn you could use spray paint and make some field lines on the yard where people can play with the wiffle ball and bat.  Have your son and immediate family wear matching T-shirts and hats(either with your favorite professional team or make them yourself.)  Make some phony baseball cards and tickets on the computer and print out for decorations on 8 1/2 by 11 sheets.  If you have a big tv and wanted to spend extra money you could buy plug and play baseball video game for everyone to try.  http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...

  4. Oriental trading is the place to start, but dont forget the corndogs!  Just today, there is an episode w/sandra lee on semi homemade from foodnetwork.com about a party based

on a carnival theme................including corndogs, caramel apples & frozen bananas........happy theme partying!

    all recipes available via foodnetwork.com

  5. Have stuff they have at a ball games, hot dogs, cracker jacks, pretzels etc.  Have a cake in the shape of a ball and glove.  I have seen little bats at walmart during the spring/summer that are filled with sunflower seeds that  would be a great party gift for the older ones.  For the younger ones, you could give them a bat and ball set to take home.  They are really not that expensive and I have even seen them at the dollar tree for a buck.  Have a game of baseball going, the little ones can hit off of a tee and the older ones could just play.  Have some baseball music going, Alabamas' Cheap Seats, Put Me In Coach, etc.  You could do a starting lineup for all of the people at the party.  Most of all just have lots of fun !
