Baseball celebrations gone wrong
There is nothing funny about an injury on the field when two teams engage in a game of baseball.
However when the injury occurs during a celebration, questions spring up in relevance to the nature of the festivity. The simple fact that traditional moments are usually marked by the way teams celebrate the occasion, puts a lot of emphasis on the variant
emotions riding high on the silver lining.
Ball Clubs across the country have been facing awkward injury concerns during the years and some of those moments spilled out during the regular season in 2010.
Florida Marlins lost one of their premier rookies, Chris Coghlan, when he erratically slammed a pie on Wes Helms face mid air and landed on his feet in an awkward manner in July 2010. Helms had driven his side to a 5-4 victory against the Atlanta Braves
in the game but that lost all the focus when Chris had to go for surgery the following week.
The Los Angeles Angels, on the other hand, faced the worst situation on their end as Kendry Morales had to be stretchered-off to the medical centre following a weird walk-off celebratory accident in May 2010. He subsequently underwent a surgery on his leg
after which he spent two months on crutches.
The Angels were facing the Seattle Mariners and the score was tied at 1-1 in the 10th inning. Kendry smashed a grand slam home run to end the game boosting the score up to 5-1 in Los Angeles’ favour. While Morales made his way to the last base
he jumped twice and on his last skip, he landed awkwardly on his left leg. Teammate Torii Hunter was in the clubhouse when the incident took place. He was watching the situation unravel on television.
"He went up in a non-athletic way the second time and fell backwards," Torii Hunter said. "He was off balance for the second jump. I always said somebody was going to land on somebody's foot, twist an ankle, spike somebody in one of those celebrations. I've
thought about that for years."
Morales shared his thoughts on the aftermath of the incident and talked about his desire to get back to playing for the Angels.
"It's been difficult, because it's the first time in my career I've been in this position," Kendry Morales said. "As much as you want to help on the field, you can't. You try to help mentally with the guys. I talk to them quite a bit - joke around and bust
their chops, like before."
