Baseball commissioner Bud Selig expects two one-game playoffs for coming season
The Major League Baseball authorities are taking some drastic steps to capture the majority votes of baseball owners in their favour.
Recently, MLB commissioner Bud Selig gave an exclusive interview to a renowned sports channel and told some very affirmative and expected steps forward to involve more teams to win the World Series in every season.
Selig along with a majority of MLB executives are now agreed for an extra round of wild-card playoffs in the coming season that will allow a third team from the American and National League to go ahead in the post-season. .
“I really believe we’ll have the (extra) wild card for this year,” Selig said Friday at SoxFest. “Clubs really want it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an issue that the clubs want more than to have the extra wild card.”
“We’re working on dates right now,” Selig said. “It looks to me like we’ll have it, because I’ve told everybody we have to have it. It will be exciting. A one-game playoff and it will start the playoffs off in a very exciting manner.”
The expected extra round is a one-game exclusion for both Leagues. Currently the National and American Leagues compete in the playoffs. Earlier, some MLB executives and baseball owners did argue that a best of three series should be included for solving out a third wild-card spot but for other reasons, baseball’s governing authority did not schedule this late addition.
Last season, Tampa Bay Rays and St. Louis Cardinals got wild card entries. Though, the Rays could not finish on a good note but the Cardinals went all the way and won the World Series. The Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in their final encounter and demonstrated a hard fought victory.
In the meanwhile, these steps for making the next season more competitive are certainly good and will generate a more spirited 2012 season as a whole. Already, the bottom half of American League teams always show a good rivalry during the playoff race but with this third round coming, more exhilarating competition is awaiting for every Major League team.
