Basel’s Alexander Frei admits luck boosted team win against Roma
Football club, Basel went up against one of the top teams in the Italian League, last night. A.S. Roma were looking for an important win and the Swiss outfit happened to be in the way of the top seeded team as both clubs faced each other in the UEFA Champions
League. The group is plugged with German side, Bayern Munich and CFR Cluj from Romania.
The Swiss had a hard time in the competition and it wasn’t an easy try at the Roma defence as their progress in the Champions League depended on the results in the match. A win was necessary for the team and with the game going into session; the Italians
were favoured to go through with a win. Unfortunately for them that never was going to be the case as Claudio Ranieri’s management position was thrown against the wind again, following the team’s lacklustre performance in the domestic league.
Basel won the match and it was all thanks to a 3 – 1 score line that led them to the victory. Striker Alexander Frei scored the first goal and Marco Borriello responded for the Italians in the 22nd minute. The Swiss were not backing down and they
went up twice with Samuel Inkoom and Jerson Cabral slotting in two for the team.
Recently, Alexander Frei expressed his views about the match and mentioned how he enjoyed featuring in last night’s encounter. One of the reasons he quoted for coming back to Basel was to play in the UEFA Champions league. The striker was willing to share
a few words on the game and he was open about his views.
"After losing our first two games, Rome was a difficult place to come, but we came through with a win after an unbelievable first-half display,” he said.
The Italian crowd has always been expressive at Roma’s home ground and with every European game being played there, the ambiance is electrifying. The player continued on saying, ”We lost our way in the first 20 minutes of the second half, when Roma put us
under a lot of pressure, but towards the end of the match we managed to respond although I have to admit we were a bit lucky.”
He concluded saying, "We had the right answers. For us, it was very important to clinch our first victory in the Champions League. We can now take every match on a game-by-game basis and see where we stand at the end."
