  1. Do you have a sump, and a sump pump?  It is possible to install those yourself, with a little work, but it should have been done when the house was built. Research it on the web and see if you think you can tackle it yourself.  I have seen them installed in an older house, on This Ole House.  


  2. Where is the water coming from. Find that out first.

    Don't know if you have carpet down there?

    If not:

    When I had this problem I used a pool pump.

    They are fairly inexpensive, just hook a hose up to it & run it outside or into the sink

    If you do:

    Depending on how long the water was down. You need to pull back the carpet, cut out the affected pad & replace it with new pad. You can bring a piece to Home Depot to match it up. Raise the carpet with a crate or something & let a fan blow on it until it's dry. Then replace the pad.

    You should have the carpet cleaned afterwards.
