What proportion of houses in the southern US have basements?

  1. Few, due to mostly high water tables.


  2. No basements in Texas because of the soil.  The soil is clay and it shifts in dry weather and because of this problem, many homes have foundation problems, cracked walls.  etc

  3. Very very few built after the '20s.

I would say less than 10%.  It is not the case that you can't have one, it is the case that the earth is either to rocky, the water table to high, or just poor soil conditions to dig through.  The biggest reasons after that is that in most southern areas, land is very much abundant and the need to go underground for more square footage is too costly.  You can build wider and higher in these areas.  It is very counter intuitive though that more house don't have a basement, when a lot of bad weather comes through these areas.
