Basic Tennis Skills?

I want to start playing tennis, and I am currently going to take some tennis lessons. I would like to know some of the intial basic skills/strokes. Any other advice for beginning tennis players? Thanks!

  1. Alright. So basic strokes: groundstrokes (forehand, backhand), net volleys, overheads, and serves.

    Not going to teach you scoring, you can look that up.

    You start the ball in play by hitting a serve (toss the ball up and hit it over your head) to the box on the opposite side of the court. You stand behind the baseline, and you can't less your feet cross.

    When you are near the baseline, you hit the basic groundstrokes, and if you know how to play at all, thats what you hit.

    When you can get up to the net (a really good idea), you hit net volleys. They are like punches, and you don't swing the racquet.

    If you are at the net, and the ball goes over your head, you hit an overhead (duh). Its like a serve, except you don't have to hit it into a box or anything.

    Thats all I can explain right now. It takes forever to explain more.
