Basic Volleyball rules: How scoring is done?
The famous volleyball player Kerri Walsh, explained the game from her perspective in the following words: “you touch every other ball and, if you s***w up, you only have one more person to back you up. You can’t go hide in the corner.”
The above statements explained clearly the importance of not messing it up because there is little chance of error. With six players playing on one team and the ball moving back and forth between the two sides of the court in speed, it becomes more important
to stay alert and focused. So if you are a beginner and do not want to make mistakes that would cost your team some crucial points, here is a lesson in the basic rules of volleyball.
This is the second article in a series that will educate you in what to do and what to avoid once you are on the court. We have already discussed the start of the game and the rules involved with the serving of the ball. In this article, we will move on
to the rules that govern play once the match has started.
Therefore let’s not waste time and teach you the rules of scoring in volleyball.
According to the set international volleyball rules, the points are scored on a rally basis. This is a scoring method that gives the advantage to the team that has secured a point, regardless of which team made the serve. If for instance, your team has served
the ball and during game play the opposing team drops the ball and gives the point to your team, the serve will remain with your side. In the other scenario, if your team has served the ball but fails to secure a point as the other team’s scores, the serve
will change and go to the opposite side. The serve will remain with one particular team unless the other one scores a point.
For each score that a team is able to make, the point given will not exceed one. This brings us to the question of how scoring is done in volleyball. If you are on the side that has made the attack, there are two ways in which your team can score a point.
The first of the two may occur if the defensive side has failed to save the ball from hitting their side of the court, this will be considered a defence miss and the attacking side will take the point. The other way in which the attacking side can score a
point is if the defence does hit the ball but it does not fall within the defined boundaries on the other side of the court.
If you are on the defensive team, than there are three ways in which your side can score a point. The most obvious one is that if the attacked ball fails to fall within the defined boundaries on your side of the court or if it fails to cross over to your
side at all and instead, hits the net. A point will also go to the defensive side if the other team carries out an offensive miss.
The determined points for a volleyball game are 25. Any side that is first able to reach the mark wins the game. However, it is essential that the winning side does so by a margin of two points.
With that, we end this session about scoring. Stay tuned for more about volleyball rules.
