Basic chess opening strategies
Just started playing chess and want to know how the pieces move? It is just like learning the alphabets? Planning to quit the black and white jungle before you even started exploring? There is no need to be disheartened. After all, every chess-master was
once a beginner and one of the best ways to master chess is by learning from your mistakes. The other best way to learn chess is by going through this article because here we have summarized the basic, opening chess strategies, for you.
We will discuss an opening strategy that is generally made use of and gives a player a solid position early in the game. During the course of this discussion, we’ll be the white side.
It is a good practice to make the first move by either moving the pawn in front of the king or the queen. In both cases, this step gives room for your queen and bishop to move about. Once you have moved either the king’s pawn or the queen’s pawn, the second
move should be to move the pawn that you had not moved previously. In this way, by the end of your second turn, you should have both the king and queen’s pawn in the middle of the chess board.
The next thing you should do is to move your knights towards the middle. Remember, it is always better to move the knights before the bishops. The reason behind this tactic is that it is easier to find the knights a good place at the start of the game then
it is later on. Generally, you should be able to develop a position in which both your knights are oriented towards the middle. By this time you have a reasonably strong position in the center. This position is usually stable and gives you a good defense.
It also provides reasonable support to the bishops and the queen if you want to go on the offensive. An important thing to keep in mind is to avoid moving the same piece multiple times, early in the game as it usually wastes a move. The opening acts as a staging
area which should be utilized to position your pieces in the best way possible, to give yourself the advantage later on in the game.
Another way to strengthen your position early on is to castle the king. This brings the king in the safest position before the opponent is able to bring on her attack. Not only does it remove the king from the centralized game and keeps it to the side, castling
also brings the rook towards the center, further solidifying your position. Something that will give you a disadvantage in chess is if you move the pawns further then two squares early on or let them be isolated. If you have to move the pawns at all, make
sure that you are moving them in such a way that they form a zigzag chain. Of course, if your king is castled, then moving the pawns in front of the king will be a very big mistake as it will expose the king to an attack.
Whatever move you make, keep in mind that it should target an opponent’s piece or have the potential to do so. Something that all beginners are tempted by, is to start the attack by bringing the queen out early. It is always wise to bring the queen into
play later on in the game when there are less chances of it being threatened by the opponent’s pieces. Also, the middle game provides the queen with more room to maneuver.
With that, your education about basic opening strategies finishes. Now go on and apply them by playing some chess.
