Question:

Basic ratio question. Mental blank?

This is so sad that I have to ask this, but its annoying the h**l out of me.

A tap drips 8 times per second. Five drops makes 1 mL. How much water drips in 1 hour?

It's not really the answer I'm looking for, it's the formula for working it out. So if you could please answer how I would work that out would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

  1. . Five drops makes 1 mL.

    ^^^you don't need that part

    there is 60 sec in a minute

    8x60= 480 drops per minute

    there is 60 minutes in a hour

    480x60= 28,800 drops per hour.

  2. Given 8 drips / sec

    1 hour = 60 secs

    So, 8 * 60 = 480 drips / hr

    5 drips = 1 mL

    480/5 = 96 mL/ hr

  3. No, it is not sad.i know what you mean about arriving at an answer but been unable to work it out using the proper method.

        8 times....1 sec

        5 drops.... 1 ml

        1 hour........ ? ml      (call it x ) ......X ml

        1 sec......8 drops

         1 hr .......x drops

       since the time units are diffrent,you need to make the units the

    same i.e convert the hours to seconds. Therefore ,

           1 hour....60mins

            1 min......60sec

           60min.......x sec    (cross multiply)

            x=60x60=3600sec

          So if... 1sec =8 drops

                3600sec= x drops  (cross multiply)

               x drops=3600x8    =28800 drops

           So if... 28800 drops = ? ml   (call it X ml)

                     28800 drops = x ml

         what will 5 drops be?

              28800 drops =x ml

                  5 drops    = 1 ml  (cross multiply)

                5x = 28800

         x = 28800 / 5

            = 5760 ml

        1000 ml  = 1 litre

         5760ml =  x litres

         1000x = 5760   therefore  x = 5760/1000

                                                = 5.76 litres

              Sorry for such a long explanation,just wanted to make it better

    understood.If still not understood,fire whatever questions you may have.

       PEACE.

  4. from the problem data, you can calculate how many drops you get in an hour, cosidering the fact 1 h = 60 seconds. then you just have to calculate how many ml those drops count.

  5. 8x60x60=28800 drips    28800/5= 5760mL

  6. 8x60x60div5

  7. 8 drops per second

    8*3600 = 28,800 drops per hour

    5 drops = 1 mL

    28,800/5 = 5760 mL = 5.76 L

  8. See link

  9. 1 hour = 60 secs.

    60 x 8 = 480 times per sec.

    5 drops = 1mL.

    1 drop = 0.2 mL.

    480 x 0.2 = 96mL.

    lols. i know i just had a mental block this morning where i couldnt even intepret a simple maths qns. cheers!

  10. If it's 8 times per second, then it should be 480 per minute (8x60), so that'll be 28800 per hour (480x60). Divide by 5 to find out how much that'll be in ML (5760)

  11. How many seconds in an hour?  Times that by eight, divide that by 5000 to give you an answer in litres.

    Scroll down for my answer.

    I make it 43.2

  12. 8 drips * 60 = drips/ hour = 480 drips/hour

    each 5 drips = 1mL

    480/5 = 96 mL

  13. this is what my chem teacher taught me: always make ratios, keep the terms (mL, drops), and multiply to get ur answer and make sure all the terms cancel out. like this:

    8 drops/ 1 sec x 1 mL/ 5 drops x 3600 sec/ 1 hour = some number mL/hour

    notice how all the terms cancel out and how each fraction is a ratio of something (there are 5 drops in a mL or 3600 sec in an hour)

    this lesson was probably the most important i learned in all of science

  14. well you times 8 (the drips) by 60 by 60 then divide by 5, then u have the answer in mLs
