  1. Do you mean pile driving, sheet piling?

If it is, then, pile driving is basically applied in soft foundations using pre-stressed concrete piles. In the olden days, tree trunks were used. Soft foundations include areas below sea level or when water shows up upon excavation. The piles are driven to stabilize the soil for foundation. Since the driven piles are not necessary level to each other because of different soil presssures, they are then cut evenly, the steel bars exposed and connected to the steel bars of the foundation. Simply, the concrete foundation sits on the concrete piles.

In addition, there is another term used in your "piling," which is "sheet piling." Sheet piling is a construction procedure where sheets, such as metal or wood are made to interlock to counter soil from collapsing (observe the line in the harbor, the sides of roads before they merge to the main traffic, the embankments, etc.), to prevent water from coming in while a structure is being prepared.
