Basket strain repair?

i replaced the basket strainer and the locknut is plastic. i tightened down as much as i could by hand but the way the strainer was designed it doesn't look like it will go flush with the sink. the angle is a little different so there is a tiny grove where food could get caught but there aren't any leaks. it's a double sink. also now if i push down in the middle between the two sinks it seems to give on the edge where the faucet is. is this normal? i didn't pay too much attention to it before.

You need to get a basket strainer wrench available in the plumbing section of any hardware store. once it is tighten down all the way it should work, don't forget to put plumbers putty around the basket so it doesn't leak.....Also there is another wrench to hold the basket in place while you tighten it down.....

That's why you use the basket wrench, so when you tighten it down the putty will squeeze out....You have to tighten it until it sets right.....Don't give up cause a plumber is going to charge you like $150. to do it.....

You should also dry fit the basket to make sure it works, if not return it and get the the one that is all metal without any plastic.....And don't forget to get the wrench, if you don't know what it is ask somebody........

When you say basket strainer, you're not talking about the DRAIN OPENING attached to the outlet drain PIPING, are you?  If it is the strainer BASKET, it should be removable, metal, and designed to drop down in the outlet fitting to seal off when you want to fill the sink with a level of water, and be lifted up, turned to the side, to allow water to flow freely through to the drain -- but catch any sizeable trash and prevent it from being washed into the drain piping.

all baskets strainers are a standard size made to fit standard kitchen sinks.  there should be a hole and a small groove around the hole that the strainer sits in, there should also be some sort of sealant between the strainer and the sink eg. putty, sillicone.  it should be strainer, sealant, sink, washer, slip washer,nut, washer, tailpeice, and nut.  top to bottom.  and no matter how great the installation all sinks give a little.
