Basketball Hall of Famer Ed Macauley dies at the age of 83: NBA News
NBA Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtics superstar Charles Edward Macauley, who was nicknamed as ‘Easy Ed’ during his sparkling basketball career, has died at the age of 83. The Saint Louis University, where Ed Macauley initiated
his basketball career, announced the death of seven-time NBA All-Star on Tuesday, November 8.
Charles Edward Macauley was a St. Louis man throughout his school and college career. After a glittering career at the school level, Macauley led his University to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title in 1948 and earned
his first of the many individual awards in 1949, when he was named as AP player of the Year.
During the 1949 NBA Draft, Ed Macauley was selected by the St. Louis Bombers with the territorial pick. After playing for one season with the Bombers, ‘Easy Ed’ shifted his talents to the Boston Celtics, where he became one of
the prime players of the league.
During his six dominating years in the Celtics uniform, the Ed Macauley appeared in six All-Star games and won the All-Star game Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1951. The centre was also inducted in the NBA First Team three
times and once ion All-NBA Second Team.
In 1956, Ed Macauley was traded back to his native city and he spent the last three years of his NBA career in St. Louis Hawks uniform. Coming into the Hawks, Macauley finally furnished his resume with an NBA title in 1958 and
ironically it was against the Boston Celtics.
Macauley scored more than 11,000 points in his ten seasons in the league. In recognition to his services for the game, Ed was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960. His number 22 jersey has been retired
at the Celtics.
After retiring as a player, Macauley was appointed as the head coach of St. Louis Hawks and he served the franchise for two years. After the coaching stint, he went on to become an investment banker and in the years after, he served
as a television sportscasters.
Charles Edward Macauley was one of the NBA’s first big stars whose unique style of play and charisma will be remembered for years.
