Basketball News: Memphis Grizzlies over power butter fingered Utah Jazz 110-99
Utah Jazz were hoping that Paul Millsap will return for Friday night’s showdown against the Memphis Grizzlies to give them a boost.
The inspirational forward did return, scoring a team high 20 points and Jazz also got 16 points and 13 rebounds from Al Jefferson. But, the team from Salt Lake City still didn’t manage to cope up with the red hot Memphis outfit. Grizzlies used their newfound defensive mentality and forced Utah into a season-high 23 turnovers as they romped to their third victory on the trot.
Rudy g*y led the Grizzlies with 28 points, on a 8-of-14 shooting, and complemented it with 9 boards while Zach Randolph pounded another double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Three other players also scored double figures for the home team. But on the night, it was not the offensive prowess of the Grizzlies that was the talk of the town. Rather, it was the gritty defence that bewitched all.
Grizzlies nearly matched the powerful Jazz on the board, committed 10 less turnovers and pulled off 17 steals as compared to Utah’s 7 to complete a convincing night at the post.
"We've got a lot of scorers on offense and a lot of offensive power," said reserve guard O.J. Mayo, who had 13 points and two steals. "We thought if we put as much effort on the defensive end as we did on the offensive end, we could be a heck of a team defensively."
Rudy g*y kick-started the match with a shot from downtown to give Memphis the lead, one, they never relinquished the entire match. Both the teams started the game at a furious pace. Jazz though failed to come to terms with Randolph’s early assault. The prolific sharp-shooter scored 9 points within the first five minutes, sparking the Grizzlies at a 14-7 advantage to set the match tone early.
The Jazz though slowly climbed back in the game and pulled within two going into the last 30 seconds of the first quarter. Randolph however, sprung into action again as he slipped in a layup to carry Memphis into the second frame with a 27-23 advantage.
The Memphis offense again picked up the pace early in the second period and a Mayo layup in the sixth minute shot them to a 10-point advantage. Deron Williams and Millsap however, marshalled a 13-4 Jazz run at that point to pull within one, with almost two minutes left till the break. Grizzlies though surged into the locker-room with a 6-2 spurt to create a 49-44 cushion.
Grizzlies really turned on the heat coming into the third quarter. They rattled off a 10-2 run to start the proceeding and then followed it with persistent offensive pressure to head into the final period with a 76-65 advantage.
Although ahead by 9 points, the Grizzlies found themselves in a rather precarious situation coming into the fourth quarter. They were up against the team that has proved to be the come-back king this season.
Darrell Arthur however quashed any hopes of a Jazz comeback as he opened the final quarter with seven straight points. The persistent Jazz though, still had some fight left in them. They kept on gaining momentum as the quarter unfolded and a 12-3 spurt eventually thrust them within striking distance at 88-94, with less than five minutes left to go.
This was the closest the Jazz got though as Randolph dodged the lane for a layup to nip the surge and the Grizzlies never looked back after that. g*y provided the finishing touches to the match, slipping in two from the charity stripe to hand a 110-99 win to his team.
Although, Jazz shot at 46.9 percent from the field, they committed just too many turnovers. That finally turned out to be the difference in the match. Deron Williams, who lost the ball 5 times, summed up a miserable night for the Jazz.
"We just turned the ball over a lot and didn't execute," Williams said. "We looked lost on both ends of the court. We lost the game. We can't win with 20-plus turnovers, and it starts with me."
