Question:

Basketball coach told me to change my shot?

Ok, last practice I was doing pretty well, I put in at least 15 3-pointers in a row. Then when I started missing some, at least 5 in a row the coach later told me after practice that one day I'd change my shot because the method I use works well sometimes, but not all the time. I have a shot that starts from the back of my head to the front, and it's very fluid and I've yet to ever get packed when I shoot. The way he told me to shoot was to start out in the front and simply release the ball. Now watching the NBA as much I did I knew that this was total bullshit. This guy has a son on the team who's short as h**l and I out do him in points every game. Knowing this I'm just going to work even harder on my shot and shoot at least a thousand a day from my method. I'll show him what I can do when I don't listen to him. Any ideas of what I should do or say?

  1. Well, if you are comfortable with your shooting style, I don't see why you should change except practise more to make it more consistant.  Lots of player have different styles of shooting.

The only problem is that it is your coach and he is the one who decides who will be playing.  As long as you can be more consistant, he will give you the minutes!

  2. DO NOT change your style. My coach told me last season to change my shooting style, this was after i changed my style once already when trying out different styles and found the one i'm most comfortable with. I practiced my shots everyday (that IS necessary when trying to improve) and after about 2 weeks my coach told me to stay after practice and told me that i have improved and that he was wrong to tell me to change my style. Almost everyone shoots different so shoot how you feel comfortable shooting. You might want to try different styles and see how you feel most comfortable shooting and then practicing that style.

  3. coaches are there to teach and instill basketball IQ but the techniques and methods is up to you... they cant teach your body to get accustomed to a shot or to a method? example Peja stojakovic if a college coach saw him they will get mad at his release it is so unorthodox...but h**l its effective yes? :D

i know what you feel i have three different forms of shots when i play... one for close range one for medium and one for long range. its effective too because the defender doesnt know how you will release it and he will keep guessing, the problem and downside is the consistency, if you master your consistency together with the jump shot you have then you have no problem.

coaches are there to tell you HOW to play... but the WAY and METHOD you play is up to you as long as YOU FOLLOW the GAME PLAN

    good luck man

  4. RIGHT ON!!

If you think its fine then keep it that way

If you practice it enough he will shut up

  5. If you are good and very computable with your shooting style you should keep it that way no matter what anyone says. And if you play well with it you should definitely keep it. Have you seen some of these NBA players shots like Shawn Marion and one of the best shooters Dirk Nowitzki? They all have shots like you they start from the back of their heads and work to the front. And anyways your coach probably just wants you to stop shooting so well because he wants his son to play better than you so their is also a jealousy factor involved in this. So I say just keep on doing your shot and prove your coach wrong!

  6. I think you should just stick with what you have because if you don't get the ball packed, it's a good shot and shooting 15 3- pointers in a row is pretty good. Missing some is not a big deal.

  7. Well, I know how your shot looks like because there is this certain race that loves shooting like that. I don't trust them with shooting, but they are fast as h**l! Their malnutrition must allow them with going that fast.

  8. Well, after seeing a lot of great shooters pass through all types of leagues, I don't think there can be a defined proper method; it just doesn't make sense anymore especially when there are players today with unorthodox actions like Peja Stojakovic and Shawn Marion to name a few.

By the way, have you seen Marion shoot the ball? He's got a great little mid range game...But the ball seems like it squirts out of his hands!

Who's shooting action is more perfect than the other? Steve Kerr or Larry Bird? One shoots front on the other a little to the side.

The point I'm trying to make is that, if your technique is working for you, I suggest you stick to it. I tried to change my technique as a friend noted my elbows are slightly flared like Reggie Millers; and that it should be straight. I later figured that was BS and I was just wasting my time and game by trying something totally unnatural.

Go for what feels right and don't worry about coach. All he wants is for you to perform at your best. Show him you can with your own natural techniques and talents.
