Ok I've played basketball since I was 9 years old And I'm thinking of playing basketball at my school. Do you have to "try out"to be on a team? Cuz I grew up on a reservation playing basketball with a bunch of kids. So I thought this was true cuz one of my cousin said I can "steal the basketball" from the other opponent. Am I allowed to during a real game or during a one-on-one game?

  1. Yes you are allowed to steal. The school has A,B,C,D,E,F teams if your school is big. Sometimes there are only A,B. A team is best, B team is second best and so on. Also remember to steal the ball without touching the other players hands or arms to avoid a reaching in foul. Good luck!

  2. Im sure u will make the team

  3. Yes, you are allowed to steal a ball from another opponent.

  4. Stealing a ball is good defense. Just try to tap the ball away from the opposing ball handler.

  5. Spell checker.

  6. To be selected on a school basketball team depends on the city. In a community like Los Angeles, it would be a guarantee that there would be tryouts. Some schools will take anyone who is interested and be less competitive.

A tryout is a coach's chance to select people who can add strength to their team. This person will watch each player at tryouts to see if they have basketball fundamentals. It is hard to determine exactly what a coach will be looking for, some want a team that can play good defense (stealing the ball is part of this), or a squad that can shoot the lights out. But the most important part is fundamentals, like being able to dribble the ball with control, being able to read the court and do things to help win (all coaches want this), such as screening or running to get open for a shot.

In my own tryouts in high school, I went for defense. I showed the coaches I could stop someone dribbling past me (either blocking the shot or stealing the ball), and basically making the opponent have a very hard time scoring. But it was a fundamental that made me not get picked, left-handed layups.

I noticed stealing the ball part. When someone has the ball stolen from them, their opponent on defense most likely put an arm in front of the ball and knocked it out of control. Stealing the ball is taking a chance, it must be practiced good before gametime. To get away with it, you cannot touch their body, it has to be all basketball.

Is it true basketball is one of the most popular sports on reservations?
