I am moving into an apartment and have narrowed my search to these 2 breeds. Any advice from owners would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Bassett hounds are more stubborn and don't do well on stairs.  Take that into consideration if you will have a two story apartment.  They are bigger than Jack russels by 20-40 pounds too!  Jack Russells are hyper and need lots of interaction, movement, and exercise.

Honestly, I'm not sure either works in an apartment.  Have you considered a pug?  Pugs are great apartment dogs!

  2. basset hounds

jack russells tend to bark way

to much and can be hard-headed

  3. basset hounds, jack russell's bark to much.

  4. depending on the jack russell and how you raise them makes a big difference, if you neuter or spay them at 6months it tends to calm them down making them less likely to want to run. They do require lots of attention and exercise , if you can give a good part of your day to them and be able to walk them or take them to the woods with that in mind jack russells make very loyal loving best friends,I wouldnt trade mine for anything.  I have 3 , a female who is 5yrs and very calm and laid back  and 2 males who are a little energetic yet very smart and full of love, Im not sure of bassetts ,from what i know of them they are very laid back sometimes to much yet also very loving, .You have to take a look at your lifestyle and the time you have to give eather dog. Good luck

  5. Bassets are sweet but prone to ear problems, tend to have strong body odor and bay or howl instead of bark ( annoying to neighbors) J.R.' need a lot of exercise & tend to need to be kept busy, mine ate the leather seats in my Jaguar in less than 10 minutes but once they are trained are great dogs

  6. Basset Hounds are calmer and would prob. be better to have in an appartment so you fon't get complaints from neighbors.

  7. basset hound

  8. I actually have owned both.Depending on what you can handle the Jack Russell is a high voltage wildly active tempered dog. They like to bounce off the walls and may not be what you want in an apartment.A Basset is much mellower.I will tell you that Bassets and Beagles do have a tendency to pass gas.
