Basseterre, the dark horse in the Selecta Systems Handicap at Haydock
The Class 3 Selecta Systems Handicap has not been able to pull together one of the most exciting line-ups as there are just two prominent entries out of the ten, who will race over a mile at Haydock on Thursday, 5th July.
Mark Johnston has saddled three winners at the race before, and today he will get represented by, Kinloch Castle. He does lead by the 6 to 1 shot, but a far stronger contender in the shadows is, Basseterre.
The three-year-old is worthy of respect not because his trainer, Charles Hills, has been winning at the race course, but because the Irish bay colt has been able pull out of a few races rather decently.
Cape Cross’ three-year-old shot it off by breaking the maiden on 21st January, 2012 at Lingfield over a mile in the Marsh Green Maiden Stakes.
After meeting a ghastly seventh position in the second outing of his career, the Higher Love foaled bounced back during the very next chance.
Basseterre scored second in the Kempton For Outdoor Events Handicap on 15th May at Kempton over a mile. He did not make it easy for the winner, Curzon Line, who faced a fierce battle in the final furlong, where the runner-up squeezed in the margin to just a short head’s difference.
Making way into the third spot after being left behind by merely a neck’s margin was, Dynamic Duo.
The H. R. Mould owned then won the PHS Direct Handicap on 25th May, 2012 at Haydock over a mile. The three-year-old, held back in the rear initially, but burst into speed in the last two furlongs. He won easily by one and one-half length’s margin.
Riding with Kieren Fallon, he set, Devdas, second while Nelson’s Bay filled up the third spot.
Charles Hills’ trainee gave the most recent shot in the Scottish Sun On Sunday Handicap on 23rd June, 2012, at Ayr over a mile, and ended third behind the winner, Ardmay.
Finishing after the gap of 1 ¾ lengths was the runner-up, Satanic Beat.
