Bassist having Issues with band? HELP!!?

The singer and guitarist (we're all childhood friends) are starting to seriously get on my nerves with their 'Rock rules', we all grew up watching rockumentaries so they pick on me for being a bassist. I'm tired of doubling the guitarist and they have it their mind that that's what 'bassists do' , during practice they harass me to turn down and whenever he emails us mp3s my channel almost has no volume. Also I've written songs where both guitar and bass have prominant roles and they ALL get rejected and at shows they butt in whenever a chick is talking to me afterwards. I'm getting sick of this, should I quit? The drummer and I are secretly thinking of telling them to shove their poser rules and quitting.

  1. Ted,

If you and the drummer are a tight unit, then GO!

There are other players out looking for you guys. Clearly, those knuckleheads don't have the faintest clue as to what ties together a coherent and cohesive band. Rockumentaries, yeah right! Bwaaaaahahaha!

    Good luck to you, AK

  2. Realize that as a bassist your probably the hardest person to replace, or maybe second hardest if your drummer has a van. Follow the kick drum for a while, and that should p**s them off enough to give you more lee-way. If they keep telling you how to play, then walk. if you take the drummer with you they'll collapse.

  3. Murderface, is that you?  If you're having problems with the band, you could've just told us.

    Sincerely,

    Nathan Explosion

  4. welcome to the real world of bullslit ego artist musicians.

the best musicians i have worked with have no problem with bassists playing free and being inventive (as long as you drive the tunes).

if your buds cant handle your musical growth-somethings  gotta change!

  5. "That's what bassists do???"  That's not what GOOD bassists do.  A good bass player is worth his weight in gold, so take a walk.  Let them find someone who will put up with their bullsh!t, and you can find better musicians to play with.

  6. Yeah, time to move on bro ...........................................

Its not going to get any better.

  7. What you should do is, have you and the drummer tell the guitarist and the singer to go f*** themselves first off. Than start your own band together, and it will all work out from there trust me.

  8. Start another band with your drummer & make it a good one.

Prove to yourself & the other current band members that your full potential is not being realised at the moment and make your ideas work in another ensemble.

Don't be to hasty to throw away childhood friendships.

Keep your musical ideas to yourself or use them in another band.

Don't hang around after gigs with your current band.

Play the show & get out of there.

Use only a DI and foldback at shows - it makes a quick getaway after the set a heap easier !

If you must hang around after shows try asking chicks for their phone numbers & catch up with them at another time AWAY from the other band members.

Have a break from the band thing & give yourself & the other dudes some time to reflect on things. You can announce a break formally, citing work commitments or personal probs or travel or whatever.

Don't quit, just make some changes & put your musical ideas into practice in another band - your band !!!

  9. A bassist with a rig can always land a gig.

    Walk bro!
