Bastian Trinker outplays Simone Vagnozzi in the second round qualifiers – Croatia Open Umag 2012
Unseeded Austrian youngster, Bastian Trinker, outplayed the fifth seeded Italian, Simone Vagnozzi, in the second round of the qualifying draw at the ATP VEGETA Croatia Open Umag. The 22-year-old went through three gruelling sets,
taking three hours and 24 minutes of play to settle the clash at 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(5).
Both men displayed brilliant clay-court tennis skills throughout the contest but it was sheer determination of the 768th ranked Austrian which prevailed in the end. He gave some real tough time to the fifth seeded Italian
in the opening set of the match but couldn’t hang on in the pressure situation. However, he had his revenge in the second set and spared barely two games for Vagnozzi before pocketing the set comprehensively. The fifth seed threw his best at the Austrian youngster
in the final set and brought a tie-breaker round play. Trinker learned from his mistakes in the opening set and play flawlessly in the tie-break to turn the tables on Vagnozzi in style.
Albeit Trinker had a below par serve precision of merely 49 per cent in the match, he banged in 11 thudding aces and clinched 41 out of 62 first serve points en route to victory. Three double faults were recorded by him and he
broke the Italian serve six out of 12 times to drive the fifth seeded contestant out of the qualifiers. Vagnozzi coughed seven double faults on the most crucial moments of the match and they proved to be extremely taxing in the end. He had 14 break opportunities
in the match but squandered 10 priceless chances and only converted just four of them to finish on the losing side in the end.
The contest took off with successive serve holds from both ends in the opening four games before the actual action began. A total of six break points were registered in the set, three from each contender, to take the scores at
6-6. Trinker took the opener at 7-6(2) but two cracking breaks of serve from Vagnozzi in the second set forced him to surrender at 2-6. The Austrian kept his spirits high in the match and went on to win the third set tie-break at 7-6(5), advancing into the
qualifying competition of the tournament.
