Question:

Bat at the base of a tree?

I found a bat at the base of a tree on my patio when it was early evening. I made all my cats come inside in fear they will find it and try to bring it inside. The bat is hanging upside down and when I checked on it after dark, about 10:30 pm, it was still there. When will it fly away? Or will it? could it be injured or ill?

  1. Bats do not normally carry rabies, that is a misconception.  It may need to migrate or rest after an injury.

Just check on it and after a few days if it is not gone then notify authorities.  With the US bat problem, I would think it is a welcome sight.  Enjoy it while it is visiting!

    Adieu!

  2. For the species of bats I'm familiar with, that's odd behavior.  I would assume this one to be ill.  You may want to notify your county health department if there is bat rabies in your state.
