Bated Breath a possible threat for Black Caviar in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes
Roger Charlton’s confidence in his five-year-old under charge has surged after the bay horse won the Group 2 Betfred.Com Temple Stakes (British Champions Series) on 26th May at Haydock over five furlongs.
Not only did he win as the favourite but he demolished the track record by taking 1.3 seconds less than the shortest time that was struck before. He put in all the effort that was required for winning as the runner up, Sole Power, was reeling in for the
wire just by a mere neck’s margin.
Stationing third behind the winner was Spirit Quartz.
"We're all very pleased with him," said Charlton. "There was quite a lot of pressure as we did need to win a Group race with him at some stage, so at least we've got that box ticked.
"I was very impressed by the speed he showed. He has enough speed to lead the fastest horses around and two furlongs down the others were flat to the boards”.
Last year Dansili’s horse finished fifth in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes on 18th June at the Ascot over six furlongs. The race was won by Society Rock and finishing the closest to the winner was Monsieur Chevalier.
This time around, Bated Breath has improved to an extent that he is completely capable of threatening the unbeaten Australian star mare Black Caviar. His Haydock success has made him the undisputed second favourite as far as betting is concerned. The favourite
obviously being Black Caviar.
Besides the talent that the five-year-old has show cased recently, he might just get lucky as Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody is already doubtful about the impact that the long trip will have upon his champion mare. However, it can cost Roger Charlton
to grow completely over confident about the success as Peter Moody is not sending his racing sensation unprepared.
Rather he is so concerned about the top notch performance in the race that he made Black Caviar work out at home. He did not wait for her to reach the Royal Ascot as the thirty-hour trip will for sure wear the mare down and instead of working out then she
would need to rest.
"I hope Peter Moody is watching and saw we knocked 1.3 seconds off the track record," Charlton said.
How true would Roger Charlton’s claims stand out to be will get sorted out in less than a month.
