Bated Breath dethrones Sole Power in the Betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock
Bated Breath conquered the Group 2 Betfred.com Temple Stakes (British Champions Series) at Haydock on 26th May, 2012, and left the competition far behind him, struggling to keep up.
With odds of 2 to 1 and status as a favourite, he raced with all his might and defeated last year’s winner, Sole Power, and downed the majestic victory.
The son of Dansili, out of mare Tantina, was teamed with rider George Baker and brought his best to the track, where he finished a neck before Sole Power whereas the Robert Cowell trained Spirit Quartz finished in third, 3 ¾ lengths behind the winner.
The Roger Charlton trained bay runner’s triumph was extremely encouraging for his connections as he finished eighth in the Group 1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin on 11th December, 2011.
The beginning to the season was brilliant and the bay horse has bigger and better things in store for him.
The five-year-old horse was supposed to be mounted by rider James Doyle, but George Baker replaced him since he was suspended.
Regarding this, the winning rider said:
"I feel a bit sorry for James Doyle as he is banned, but his bad fortune is my good luck. The horse deserved this and hopefully this leads on to better things for him."
Charlton discussed the future plans of the runner and commented to the press that he will talk to the rest of connections but his next stop is likely to be Royal Ascot where racing in the King's Stand would be a better option than the Diamond Jubilee, where
he will have to compete against Peter Moody’s charge Black Caviar, who remains undefeated.
Sole Power’s mount for the race was Paul Hanagan and he was happy with the way he performed.
Edward Lynam, who trains the five-year-old gelding stated he will compete at Royal Ascot and told the press that:
"He's run a corker, he's broken the track record and didn't win. We've just run into a very good horse on the day. Paul (Hanagan) was delighted with him and we'll take him on again in the King's Stand."
