  1. Take out the part of ceiling where it is dripping- cut it out to get a peek, providing there is no wires or other things that would get away. You'll need to be able to visualize if the water is running down from a leak further up the pipe towards the drain opening, or if it is dripping exactly where the leak is.

    You will then be able to tell not only if you have any dry rot, but just how much work you'll be up for. In the meantime, do not use the bathtub upstairs until this is fixed.
