Question:

Bathroom sink popup/stopper leak question.

My bathroom sink is leaking from the popup/stopper when the water is on. Specifically, water drips from the bottom of the vertical metal strap that connects to the horizontal bar when either the hot or cold water is running, regardless if the popup is open or closed.

Does this mean that BOTH tap cartridges are shot and need to be replaced, or does it mean that I need to replace the entire taps/spout assembly?

I may be considering replacing the vanity and toilet anyway in the near future which would negate the fix, but I am looking for a solution here other than placing a bucket below the sink!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Greg

  1. i'm a little confused.  why wouldn't you just replace the pop up UNIT, that whole piece.   i don't see any relationship between the tap cartridges and the DRAIN.    i believe there may be a rubber fitting that you may be able to replace to stop the leak.  if i'm not mistaken that piece where the arm comes out of screws off with the arm attached, and you can then just replace that part where the leak is coming from.

  2. None of the above. Look where the round metal rod comes out of the verticle pipe. There is a nut there and it is probably loose, allowing water to exit. If tightening the nut doesn't work, remove it and replace the rubber/neoprene washer that is nestled inside the nut.

  3. I'd agree with sensible. It might not be the cartridges at all, but rather the pop-up assembly. A small leak here will follow the metal parts and appear to be leaking from a different location. The fix is easy; just tighten the nut that holds the stopper rod to the drain. Here's a short video that will explain what everything looks like:
