Batman: Arkham City will see things heat up between Catwoman and Batman
Rocksteady raised the bar on video game adaptations of comic books with their award winning and critically acclaimed original, Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Now it seems they want to take gamers into a deeper, more human, side of Batman as they will show the caped crusader developing a relationship and some heat with feline femme fatale, Catwoman, in the highly anticipated, Batman: Arkham City.
The studio seem to have hired a devout Alfred Hitchcock fan to market the latest game as the level of suspense and tension they have created is off the charts. Never rumouring anything until it is confirmed with a trailer or a press release, Rocksteady have
the fans guessing who will end up in the game.
In fact, when Solomon Grundy was revealed in the Penguin trailer and Talia Al Ghul was announced by the developers, it took everyone in the gaming world, pleasantly, by surprise.
Rocksteady seem to want to continue the trend of giving every character a strong background and attention to detail, one of the hallmarks which made Arkham Asylum such a great game, as they are bringing in a bit of drama for the second Batman title.
Those familiar with the DC comic book series will know that Catwoman is not only one of Batman’s love interests, though its more of an on and off thing, but also one of the caped crusader’s most cunning foes.
Fans will get to see a bit of both in Arkham City, as the two pair up to bring down the Joker, Two Face and host of other villains, although Catwoman is only siding with Batman for her own, as yet unknown, motives.
According to Paul Dini, the game’s writer, both the characters will have a fair amount of ‘heat’ between each other, but more in the form of an edgy, fragile, quick-to-turn-ugly kind of a bond.
“There is a lot of heat between them, we're not going to take it really beyond that in a soap opera way. There is affection, mutual esteem, and there is also a lot of stubbornness. Like, if you don't do what I'm going to say we're going to fight now,” said
Dini.
So the romance is set to bring more another layer of tension to the game. He also added that along with the romantic side there would be a fair amount of friction between the two as well, with each of the characters belonging to opposite sides of the law.
Dini went on to add, “There's always going to be that heat between them and yet there is always going to be friction between them because when it comes down to it they have different methodology on how they solve a problem. For as much as they feel for each
other, one's on this side of the law and the one's on the other side of the law.”
It seems Batman: Arkham City is raising the stakes with every announcement they make and it makes us wonder; what is the next surprise going to be?
