Batman:Dark Knight?

Was it a good movie?

I was hesitant to see The Dark Knight because of the hype over Heath Ledger's role as Joker. I kept thinking back to Jack Nicholson's iconic performance in Batman, with Michael Keaton. He was fantastic in that -- he stole every scene he was in, and he delivered one memorable line after another one. ("Ooh, we got a live one here!" "Town needs an e***a!" "Where does he get those wonderful toys?") But when all was said and done, he was a comic book character. But, he was cool and funny and deranged. I thought that was the best that could be done with the character, but I was wrong.

Ledger was scary. I've been scouring my memory since returning from the theater to figure out when a particular character had last scared me this much in a movie, and my only answer is Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. At least twice, Ledger gave me shivery goose bumps of fear. His character was like Lecter and the Saw movies' Jigsaw combined within an unfettered, evil, chaotic genius. After awhile, you had to stop thinking what new trick he could possibly pull from his bag next, and go with the horrifying flow. Ledger made Joker beyond engrossing. I am already looking forward to seeing this movie again.

Other things I liked: the new actress playing Rachel; the fact that Oldman was given plenty to do; the way Bale portrayed Wayne and Batman so radically differently that it was no wonder nobody could figure out his identity; the frighteningly believable genesis of Two Face; and, most of all, the wonderful number of fascinating and complex moral quandaries presented to various characters throughout. I cannot recommend The Dark Knight more highly to anyone who reads this.
