Question:

Bats hibernating...?

although bat is a mammal while hibernating its body temperature is the same with its environment.if a hibernating bat is given a shock it wakes up for a second and sleeps again.why?!

  1. Basically because the bat is still pretty much asleep and groggy.

    Unless the stimulus is strong, the bat won't fully wake up, but will fall right back asleep, probably unaware that it even woke up at all.

    Waking up and building the energy required for motion, brain activity, sensory input and everything else takes a lot of resources - it burns a lot of energy, much like starting your car takes a lot more energy on a cold day than it does for the car to idle quietly on a warm day.

    Bats don't really have huge reserves of energy to go blowing on every little thing that might wake them up while they're hibernating.  If they get woken up too often, or for too long during the winter, they could easily burn so much energy that they don't have enough to survive the winter.
