  1. There is no longer anywhere in Europe that recycles small dry cell batteries. Even if your local authority offers to collect your used batteries, they just end up in landfill.

  2. Batteries, as in AA, D cell.  Are bad in landfill, leaching heavy metals.  Here's what I do.  First, I minimize their use.  2nd, I use rechargables.  3rd, I recharge even the ones that say you shouldn't recharge them.  (I was astonished to learn you could do this).  I lay a sheet of plastic wrap on the recharger before inserting the batteries so if they leak they'll make less of a mess.  Just make sure the plastic doesn't interfere with the electrical contacts.  If  the batteries leak on the recharger you'll need to rinse things off thoroughly.  I got my charger for free so haven't worried to much but it's been okay.  And finally, I collect truely dead batteries in a plastic juice jug and hope to finally get my 10 years worth to my town's toxic waste day this May.
