Question:

Battery Acid Ruining Your Clothing?

My husband works in a company where he handles and changes batteries (like boat motor or car) and so quite frequently he gets battery acid spots onto his clothing... after washing them, holes begin to appear from the acid. It gets quite expensive buying new clothing all the time.. so I'm just curious.. does anyone have a solution to this? Is there anyway I can do something before washing them to prevent it? Any solution at all? Answers are much appreciated!! Thank you to anyone and all of you who may answer

  1. That stuff can give you cancer as well . He should look into getting protective clothing . You can patch the holes but the man will only patch so far .

  2. By the time the clothes reach you there is nothing you could do.  His employer apparently is not requiring safe practice in the handling of sulfuric acid.  He should be providing protective clothing, gloves, eye shields and the like.

Acid on the clothing is surely acid on the skin sometimes, too.

  3. Ed covered the jist of it.

However get him a rubber apron and chemical gloves to wear while carrying  the batteries. He should also as mention wear protective glasses.

And no, once you splash your clothes with acid there is no cure. I have wasted a few good pants while working on my own cars.

  4. There must be smocks or aprons made to protect clothing while working on this kind of job. Battery acid will not eat 100% wool. If he could find a pair of trousers made of 100%wool and keep them where he works, this might be just what he needs to solve the problem.
