Question:

Battery check light Engaged!?

I have a 2003 dodge neon (automatic) Less than 2 weeks ago I purchased a new duralast battery from Auto Zone, because when they tested the old battery, it was dead ( or so their machine said so)....Now after driving for 2 weeks with the new battery the check battery light comes on when I run the air conditioner....(that's the only time the battery light comes on. Today while driving I turned on the air conditioner and it smelled as if something was burning and the check battery light came on. The new battery is less than 2 weeks old. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this? This never happened until the new battery was installed. Thank-you for any help anyone can offer

  1. There is a short in the wiring to the AC curcuit causing to much draw and thats whats making the light come on and the smell. It could be as simple as the ac switch but you need to have it checked out before it catches fire.

  2. I'm going by that burning smell you mention and the fact the batt lite only came on when you turned on the A/C.

    Both at the same time.

I think the A/C compressor is the problem.

Its real hard to turn,,so the belt slips,,an you get that smell. At the same time it slows the rotation of the belt and that in turn slows down the charge rate of the alternator--- so the lite goes on.

Whats going to happen also is its going to snap the belt and you'l be stuck. So whatever you get fixed make sure you change the belt also because it's taking a beating.

  3. You need to check all the pulleys and accessory drives. You may have

an alternator seizing or a accessory drive/ idler or tensioner seizing

causing the alternator to not turn. which will cause the light to come

on. Also the power steering and the a/c compressor run off the belt

The fact that the Light comes on after you engage the A/c compressor

leads me to believe you may have a a/c compressor issue. Find a good

shop and get it checked out.

  4. Alternator.  Maybe AC is getting ready to go, who knows.  Take it to Auto Zone and tell someone about it.  The have a tester that hooks up to the alternator on the car.  Listen to your car carefully when you engage the AC to see if there is any changes in the sound like it is straining or there is a winding noise.  Then you could be looking at AC compressor, or if you are lucky, just a tension pulley.

  5. you need to have it checked out to find the problem.

  6. could be your alternator, the alternator recharges your battery.
