  1. It's the regulator/rectifier. If Honda have a weak point its these.

    www.electrexworld.co.uk

these do replacement ignition parts for a lot less that MRP

  2. 6 volt systems are notorious for failing...more likely the regulator/recitfier is at faul...batter will be shafted now as its overcharged...also check for blown bulbs...my last xl500s was the same.

  3. first check all fuses, then all connections. Then get a meter and check for continuity through all wires. If it all comes up O.K. just replace the battery.

  4. I would be looking for short in your wiring system.  If your batt is getting that hot it means it is charging or discharging at a high rate--prob caused by short- also-make sure bat terminal are not touching  metal..to find out if you have a short do this..Disconnect the pos. terminal batt cable..now charge the batt --now with igntion off-- touch the loose batt  cable lightly to to the batt pos terminal--if you get a spark that means some thing drawing power (short)-- ---also if brake light not working your short could be in brake wiring or the brake light swith could broken an shorting----if you keep runing with short will damage your charging system.  also charge batt with cable disconnected   and then remove charger,,leave batt disconnected over nite to see if it still has charge in the morning..to see if prob is the batt---a wire with insulation rubbed thru or pinched can cause a short --- if im right i get ten points  if im wrong i get  to spank you.

  5. If the battery is overheating it can only be a defective regulater/rectifier - should be cheap to replace with a good used part from the nearest breakers.

  6. Assumine that you have checked the obvious like battery fitted correctly and the like I would suggest well over charging.  Test the battery voltage with the engine running at about 3000 rpm and it should read no mor than 7.2v for a 6 volt system now that said are you sure that it is a 6v system as at 81 vintage I would have thought that all Honda's was 12v.  Worth a check on that in which case if you have put a 6v battery on a 12v system problem solved

Now if it is 6v then the battery voltage as I said should be no more than 7.2v and if significantly higher would point to the voltage rectifier/regulator

Good luck with your problem and happy biking

    Keep safe

  7. If the battery cables aren't reversed then it probably has an internal short.

  8. get it to your nearest garage

  9. Sounds like a dry battery.  If you can check the fluid level, do that and refill if necessary with distilled water.

If it is a sealed battery, you'll need a new one.

  10. Had the same problem with a Honda Magna, last year.  The regulator/rectifier was faulty. The headlight blew, in this case.
