  1. Radio Shack used to have a great recycling program, but they moved to the malls and I don't usually go there.  It still might be a good place to start.

  2. Ikea also recycles batteries. You may want to contact your local store, if there's one near enough.

  3. Call your local recycling center and ask questions.

  4. First I'd check your nearest junkyard.  They may offer you $ for car batteries if you are thinking that big ,but might also give you some insight into recycling alkaline ,general purpose, and lithium cells.  I'd also check out the Call 2 Recycle people   http://www.rbrc.org/call2recycle/index.h...

they offer a FREE service and are used by RadioShack,Best Buy,Circuit City,Lowes and other retailers (but  don't take non-rechargeables)

  5. Just across the st. mary's / charles co. line, on La Plata Rd. is a scraping center one mile on the left.  They used to give about $5 per car battery.

  6. One myth about the battery dropoff programs is that all batteries are recycled.  The truth is that dropoff programs only recycle the harmful batteries (such as NiCad); they throw regular batteries (like Duracell) in the trash.  Don't expect the kid behind the counter to know their fate -nor the manager.

  7. Does your college or university have an engineering department?  If so, someone there might be able to direct you where you need to go or give details as to why it's hard to do.

Also, stores like a "Batteries Plus" or automotive shops might be able to give you the name of the place they use.  Maybe all you need to do is start a "collecting site" and then take them some place else.

It can be expensive to properly dispose of them, so be sure to ask lots of questions and be sure you understand all of the answers given to you.

  8. The Whole Foods near me collects used batteries for recycling. There is a bucket by the door and you can just drop all your dead batteries there. Maybe they can give you some info on where to go from there. Good for you! What you are doing is commendable. I would send out an e mail to campus  announcing that you are collecting used/ dead batteries and set up a spot on campus ( with proper authorization of course ) where people can drop their batteries. Whether that be your dorm room, a lounge or a somewhere outside the cefateria.

You can also use the opportunity to educate some people on rechargeable batteries, so they don't go through so many!

So nice you want to make a difference!

    Good Luck!

  9. Batteries Plus has one of the largest battery recycling programs right now, everything from the standard AA's to car batteries.  They will be able to give you more information since there are so many personal and environmental safety issues.

  10. SBA??????? Make a list of why you think you can run a business in the first place.
