Batting Title up for grabs as Michael Young in second tied with Adrian Gonzalez, behind Cabrera
Michael Young recently made the news again on Monday, September 26 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim when it was brought to the focus of the baseball experts that the unofficial captain of the Texas Rangers is up for a chase in the battle for the batting title.
The last time Young picked up the achievement was back in 2005, when his batting average was .331.
At the moment, his .338 figure is tied with Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox. The current leader on the board happens to be Miguel Cabrera, with .343, and it provides an interesting viewpoint, given the fact that Cabrera’s Detroit Tigers and Young’s
Texas Rangers will be involved in the play-offs this year.
Young was asked for his opinion on the current standing in the table for the batting title. He picked up a game winning RBI single against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday that saw his team win 4-3.
"I haven't thought that much about it," Young said. "An added bonus for playing on a good team is that it allows me to put my focus [on the playoffs]. Regardless of what happens with that, I like my approach and I'm going to take it into postseason. Don't
get me wrong, it would be great to win it."
Young was .286 last year and the one thing that has gone well for him is his hitting stride. The player has one big thing that has been working well for him so far. Last year, Young was struck-out 115 times. In 2011, with just two games remaining, he has
78 strike-outs. That is a major improvement.
Young went on to say that he has made the right adjustment this season and he wants to continue on like this for the rest of his career. It will be interesting to see which one of these top players comes out on top for the Batting Title this year. As the
regular season comes to a close, the title may motivate the players to pick it up a notch and show their skills in the post-season.
