Battle for medal race entry on Day 5 of 2012 470 World Championship – Sailing Update
Day 5 of the 2012 470 World Championships did not go according to the hopes of the participants because there was little to no wind to make a good sail and the fleet, once again in the regatta, had to wait for the breeze to fill in.
The racing area was not ready because of the lack of breeze so the fleet waited for hours to start racing. The first day proceedings began at 2pm which formulated the first day standing positions.
The fleet is currently aiming for medal race cuts and are preparing for that. The regatta still has five races to complete which will lead the fleet to set their position in the medal race.
Meanwhile, at the end of Day 5 proceedings, Great Britain’s Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark were able to grab the lead of 470 Women fleet with some outstanding sailing skills on the Barcelona waters. The British sailors sailed impressively to snatch the overall
lead from Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout of Nederland.
Speaking to the local media, Berkhout said that they were first going to train in England and skip the Worlds, as they thought the conditions in Barcelona would be lighter breeze. The pair decided to practice hard after they had a disappointing regatta in
Palma. Sailing in lighter conditions seems difficult for them but they are trying hard to cover up their deficiencies.
In the Men’s fleet, the overall standings are still being led by Australian pair, Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page who grabbed the top spot from Day 2 of the regatta.
The pair continued their tremendous sailing form and did not lose focus of their goal. The pair is aiming to clinch the title once again as they get close to the finish line.
