Battlefield 3 Pre-orders from Origin will get you Dead Space 2 for free – Say What?!
Electronic Arts (EA) are gearing up for one of their most anticipated releases in recent history and for once we are talking about the FIFA series, which would be THE most important, as their upcoming modern day military shooter, Battlefield 3 nears its
release date.
EA have put a lot behind Battlefield 3 and have 50-million reasons why they need to be a success. Each reason is a dollar as the marketing budget for the game is reported to be $50-million. Staggering.
The reason the publisher is putting so much behind the title is the fact that it will be releasing just a few days prior to the hectic and fiercely competitive make or break holiday season. Going up against titles such as Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Assassin’s
Creed: Revelations, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and their main competitor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 will need all the help it can get.
It seems it will get that help in the form of a limb dismembering engineer, as Dead Space 2 will come free with every copy of Battlefield 3 which is Pre-Ordered. While this may seem a little too good to be true, the move does make perfect sense. Any Unique
Selling Point at this stage could make the difference.
The fact that Modern Warfare 3 comes with a single player campaign, while Battlefield 3 is pure multiplayer action is something EA would have been concerned about. It seems their solution was to throw in one of their AAA single player titles, namely Dead
Space, as a substitute.
However, like with everything that comes with the word ‘free’ attached to it, there is a catch. The offer can only be availed if customers Pre-order the game directly from EA’s own digital distribution platform, Origin.
As every major software publisher moves to secure its own means of direct digital distribution, it seems EA are trying to take things one step further and carving out a slice of market share for themselves. The reason being that Steam pretty much holds a
monopoly in that area and with Ubisoft working on their own distribution platform it seems it is the smart move.
At the same time, this is also a shrewd move by EA as it will grow the Dead Space series as a brand and introduce it to gamers who may not have picked up the game otherwise. Which in turn, could also lead to interest in, the as yet unannounced, Dead Space
3
Battlefield 3 is set to invade stores on the 25th of October across all major platforms, apart from the Nintendo Wii. The offer though is only expected to last till the 19th of October.
