Battlefield 3 and Jay-Z join forces to swipe at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
The latest trailer for Battlefield 3 has brought out big guns and is continuing the on-going marketing war between itself and its fierce rival, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
The Call of Duty series have always used celebrity endorsements to get their games even more publicity, with the likes of NBA superstar, Kobe Bryant and talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, just to name a few.
The previous game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, was also promoted with popular rapper Eminem’s track ‘Won’t Back Down’ as a theme for its TV Spot trailer.
Electronic Arts, Battlefield 3’s publisher, seem to have adopted the idea themselves as they enlisted the services of renowned music producer and hip-hop artist, Jay-Z, for their latest trailer. Titled ‘99 Problems’, the trailer lasts just over a minute
and shows off a number of aspects of the game. The kicker though, comes at the very end where instead of credits one sees the following line of text, ‘Above and Beyond the Call’.
As anyone who has not been living under a rock would know, the ‘Call’ can only be in reference to one thing and one thing only, Call of Duty or if one wanted to get even more specific, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
It is the latest, rather cheeky, attack on its rival in a war of words that has been going on since well before the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which took place in Los Angeles, a few months ago.
Activison have had a few things to say about their competitor as well, when they claimed that developers of Modern Warfare 3 were making a game and not an engine. A point aimed at the fact that EA would show off the FrostBite engine whenever they had the
chance. It seems that the ‘Modern’ day ‘Warfare’ between Electronic Arts and Activision is set to continue well after both games enter the ‘Battlefield’.
In the meantime we are off to count our own set of 99 problems, but one thing is for sure, worrying about the quality of video games, which will be available this holiday season, is not one.
