Battlefield 3 on 2 discs on the Xbox 360, Sony slams the Xbox 360 for being ‘inferior’
Taking a break from the, now tiring and somewhat monotonous, Battlefield 3 versus Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 argument, we move on to news that Battlefield 3 may very well be too large to fit on one disc on Microsoft’s console.
The news broke; as it always does in the interactive entertainment industry (read, video game industry) after it appeared on a poster which was promoting Electronic Arts’ title. However, EA have not made any comment on the reports and whether there is any
truth behind the story in the air.
Yet, seeing how the Xbox 360 has had this problem earlier on, it would not come as a surprise if it were true. If reader’s can recall the infamous incident where it was revealed that Metal Gear Solid 4 would have had to be shipped on six separate discs if
it were to be released on Microsoft’s console.
Also, Capcom also conceded that they had to trim down their follow up to Lost Planet due to the same DVD format which the 360 runs. At the same time, the news first emerged on a Japanese Blog site and it was quick to point out that the PlayStation 3 version
of the game would fit in all its’ entirety on one Blu Ray Disc.
This brings us conveniently to the next bit of news where Sony slammed Microsoft’s Xbox 360 as ‘inferior technology’.
Rob Dyer, the Senior Vice President of publisher relations at Sony Computer Entertainment America, is the man behind the comments. According to a term in the contracts with publisher Microsoft prohibits, ‘...content to be shipped simultaneously with competing
platforms in all regions where content is available...’
In simple terms, if a publisher is under contract with Microsoft, it pretty much becomes the company’s she-dog. Taking a swing at their rival, the Sony representative also added, “I think they want to dumb it down and keep it as pedestrian as possible so
that if you want to do anything for Blu-ray or you have extra content above 9 gigs or you want to do anything of that nature, you'd better sure as heck remember that Microsoft can't handle that.”
This was Mr. Dyer doing two things, firstly, he was promoting the Blu Ray disc used by Sony and secondly, he was openly mocking the Xbox 360 with a fact that everyone knew but few in the industry dared to speak out in public.
It seems that Microsoft need their next generation console to come out sooner rather than later, as a trend seems to be emerging where the AAA titles just do not seem to fit on one DVD disc. L.A Noire also came out on three discs on the 360, a point in case.
